WordPress is one of the most popular website building platforms on the Internet and if you’re thinking about starting a blog for your business, you need to consider it. But, not everyone has access to a web-hosting service like InterServer, Bluehost, or HostGator to make things easy. Here are the steps on how to install WordPress on your local computer and design awesome websites.
What is WordPress?
WordPress is a content management system (CMS) that allows you to create a website or blog from scratch, or to improve an existing website. It is free and open source software released under the GPL.
WordPress is used by millions of people around the world, including many large organizations, such as The Guardian, Forbes, and The New York Times. It is also popular with small businesses and individuals who or blog without spending a lot of money.
Installing WordPress on your local computer is a great way to learn how it works and to experiment with different themes and plugins.
This is great for developing WordPress sites because it simulates a real server environment. That means you can install WordPress locally and test out themes, plugins, and other changes before pushing them to your live site.
To install WordPress on your local computer using XamppServer, follow these steps:
1. Download and install XAMPP on your computer.
XAMPP stands for X-operating system, Apache, Mysql, Php, Perl. It is an open resource platform that is available for free download at https://www.apachefriends.org/. Visit the site and click on the operating system (OS) you are using and download.
Once you have downloaded and installed XamppServer, you can start it by double-clicking the shortcut on your desktop.
When you open the XAMPP, start Apache and MySQL. This will show green light when it is functioning normal as shown in the image below.
Now that XamppServer is running, you can begin the WordPress Installation.
2. Download WordPress from www.wordpress.org
The WordPress will come as a zipped folder. Right-click on it and select ‘Extract All‘. This will take some few minutes.
3. Create a folder in your Drive C:
Open your Hard Drive (Drive C:)
Open ‘xampp folder’ then create a new folder
Note that you will be using the new folder name as your domain name on your computer. In this case I used ‘computerskills.com’ as you can see in the image below.
4. Move or Copy WordPress Files to Xampp Server
Open the extracted folder and select all the files in the folder
Copy or move all the files and paste in the folder you created in ‘Step 3‘ above.
Then wait for it to finish copying.
6. Create a Database for Your Website
Open your browser and type ‘localhost’ in the URL section and hit ‘Enter’
Then click on ‘phpMyAdmin’
click on ‘New’ and insert a database name. (Note that this database name will be required in the next step)
Then click on ‘Create’
7. Install WordPress
Open your browser and type ‘localhost/name of folder’ and hit enter
Then select your language and click ‘Continue’
Input your database name and other details.
Use the database default username ‘root’ and leave the ‘password’ box empty.
Also leave ‘Database Host’ and ‘Table Prefix’
And click ‘submit’
Click on ‘Run the installation‘ and wait for it to process.
Here, you will provide more information.
Your site title is the one that will appear on your website, so it should be your company name.
You can put ‘admin’ or your name as the username (You will need it anytime you want to log into your wordpress)
Put in a strong password (You will need it anytime you want to log into your wordpress)
Then your email and click on ‘Install WordPress’
Congratulations! You have successfully installed WordPress on your local computer.
Now is the time to login and start designing your website.
9. Login and start designing your website
Here is the WordPress dashboard where you can go ahead and install a theme some plugins and start designing your website.
You can download all these from https://wordpress.org/downloads and install into your WordPress and easily design your website.
Awesome blog you have here but I was curious about if you
knew of any forums that cover the same topics discussed
in this article? I’d really love to be a part of community where I can get advice from other
experienced individuals that share the same interest.
If you have any recommendations, please let me know.
Bless you!
